How strong are salt marshes? Geotechnical properties of coastal wetland soils

چکیده

Salt marshes are globally distributed, vegetated intertidal wetlands and marsh edge erosion is common on many shores. To understand how why occurs, the response of salt substrates to applied shear vertical stress must first be quantified. This likely influenced by substrate biological, geochemical sedimentological composition. However, currently there little systematic research into between-marsh variability in these properties they affect both processes ability a maintain its position vertically within tidal frame. paper compares two contrasting sedimentology at Tillingham marsh, East England Warton Northwest England. Soil strength compressibility determined applying geotechnical methods determine resistance effective stresses. was able isolate influence roots three-dimensional sample. In stress, expected displacement magnitude recovery potential affected past conditions particularly those resulting from desiccation. The also influences through effect consolidation void ratio (or bulk density). We present evidence for connection between composition behaviour under stress. results shed light determinants erosion, which ultimately essential informed implementation nature-based coastal flood defences restoration schemes.

Effects of global climate change on coastal salt marshes

A methodology combining ecological modelling with geographical information analysis and remote sensing was employed to determine the effects of sea-level rise in estuarine salt marshes, using the Tagus estuary (Portugal) as a case study. The development of salt marsh vegetation was simulated separately for C3 and C4 plants, using a combined biogeochemical and demographic model. This simulation,...

Winter climate change and coastal wetland foundation species: salt marshes vs. mangrove forests in the southeastern United States.

We live in an era of unprecedented ecological change in which ecologists and natural resource managers are increasingly challenged to anticipate and prepare for the ecological effects of future global change. In this study, we investigated the potential effect of winter climate change upon salt marsh and mangrove forest foundation species in the southeastern United States. Our research addresse...

DIVISION S-10-WETLAND SOILS Wetland Soils — Opportunities and Challenges

Wetlands are an important natural resource in the biosphere. Traditional terms used to describe wetlands are marshes, bogs, and swamps. Early European settlers considered these areas as wastelands and did not appreciate their values. For a number of years, many of these areas were drained and used as farmland, since these lands were found to be productive. Over a 200-yr time span (1780-1980), t...
